For me, this year is all about staying local and finding hidden cottagecore gems that are close to home but also feel like they could be millions of miles away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It's no secret I love looking for warm, inviting and intimate cottages on Airbnb that have a cosy aesthetic and a desire to bring the outdoors in. And while I haven't been able to get away as much as I'd like, I recently blocked out three days to indulge in total rest and relaxation in the middle of winter at The Postman's Cottage, which is located on the gorgeous Montville Estate in Montville, Queensland.
90 minutes north of Brisbane, Montville is a nostalgic, charming little country town situated in the mountainous Sunshine Coast hinterland. Surrounded by local wineries, hatted restaurants and national parks, the main street of Montville is where you'll find all the action but you'll also feel like you've stepped back in time; there are quaint cafes serving devonshire tea, little book shops filled with fiction and non-fiction from the floor to the ceiling, untapped thrift shops and fudge stores filled with hundreds of different flavours. I love visiting Montville in winter because it means I can rug up in a coat and feel like I am worlds away from the beach, where I live in Noosa. Little did I know, tucked behind the village is The Postman's Cottage!
Montville Estate boasts an original Montville Queenslander, Eastnor House, which was built in 1895. The property acted as the first Receiving Office for mail from the UK and abroad. And nestled within Montville Estate's 1.5 acre property and just a stone's throw (literally a 2 minute walk) from the charming town of Montville, The Postman's Cottage is a cosy, refined and romantic abode for 2. As soon as you walk up the steps and onto the front porch of this cute light pink cottage, you'll notice design is at the forefront; every single element has been created for its guests to appreciate and enjoy, and to encourage connection and true relaxation.
The cottage consists of a open planned living space with a cosy couch and fireplace, a king bed with luxurious Cultiver bed linen, a Country Style worthy kitchen with a Bosch electric stove and compact oven with microwave, a bar fridge, kettle and toaster, and a separate bathroom with a claw foot bath tub, toilet, shower and vanity stocked with hair and body products by Mukti Organics. The kitchen is stocked with a basic pantry including ground coffee beans, black and herbal teas, salt and pepper, sugar and olive oil, and there is a plunger coffee maker to enjoy with a local favourite brew, Montville Coffee. I actually found it hard to leave once I arrived because the cottage is so cosy, comforting and just damn gorgeous, so make sure you pop into the IGA and the cheese shop at Maleny to stock up on groceries and all the condiments for that all important cheese platter to enjoy in front of the fireplace, or while you're soaking in the bath tub. But if you do feel like getting in the car and going on a little road trip, the beach is only 30 minutes east, Noosa is just 50 minutes north and there are an abundance of quaint hinterland towns in between.
When all you need to do is grab a book, play a game, light the fire, enjoy a walk around the grounds or up into Montville, there's a reason why this would have to be one of my favourite stays on the Sunshine Coast. And I am totally ok with that.
Note: The Postman's Cottage has an enhanced cleaning routine due to COVID-19 and they take extra care to disinfect surfaces between reservations. They also have a COVID-19 Safety Plan, so guests can relax and unwind in the knowledge that they are being taken care of.
